The OBrecs Foundation Audit Methodology

This white paper documents the methodology behind the OBrecs Foundation Audit — a free 30-minute structured walkthrough of a small business website and workflow surface. It is written for two audiences: prospective clients (so you know exactly what you are getting before you book), and for fellow practitioners (so the methodology can be examined, improved, and held to standard).

The Foundation Audit is FREE. It comes with a written summary. There is no obligation, no pitch deck, no upsell pressure. The audit exists because North American small business owners deserve to know what their actual web situation looks like — and most have never been given an honest answer.

A Conflict of Interest, Stated Plainly

OBrecs sells the remedy for the problems this audit measures. We are not a neutral party. A finding that says your schema is incomplete points toward work we would be paid to do. We disclose this because you should weigh it, and because an audit that hides its own incentive is not worth having.

What we do to keep the audit honest despite that incentive: the audit is free and unconditional, and the written summary is yours whether you hire us or not — including to hand to a competing vendor. We tell you which issues you can fix yourself without paying anyone, including us. We give you a reading list so you can verify our findings independently. We name the things that do not need changing, because an audit that finds problems everywhere is selling rather than measuring. And where another practice is the better fit, we say so and refer you.

Why the Foundation Audit Exists

Most North American small business owners have been pitched a website rebuild they did not need. The pattern is depressingly consistent. An agency or freelancer reaches out (often cold). They diagnose problems before they understand the business. They quote a rebuild that solves problems the owner did not have. They build something that fits the agency’s template library — not the business that needed it. They hand over a site stuffed with plugins the owner does not understand, hosted on infrastructure the owner cannot manage, with credentials the owner does not control. The cost creeps up every year. The work itself gets older and slower. The owner becomes hostage to whoever holds the keys.

The Foundation Audit is the antidote to this pattern. Before we ever propose any work, we measure what exists. We look at the structural health of the current web surface. We name what is working, what is broken, and what could be improved. We hand over the findings whether or not the owner ever hires us.

This is not generosity for its own sake. It is the Bespoke standard applied to client acquisition: a tailor does not propose alterations until they have measured the existing garment. A master craftsperson does not promise a fix until they understand what is actually wrong. The Foundation Audit is the measurement that must happen before any cutting.

What the Foundation Audit Covers

A Foundation Audit is a 30-minute live video call between the business owner and OBrecs. During the call, OBrecs walks through ten structural dimensions of the current web presence. The owner sees what OBrecs sees in real time. Questions are welcomed throughout. The ten dimensions audited are:

1. Indexing Health

Is the site actually visible to Google? Are pages submitted to Google Search Console? Are sitemaps active and processed? Are there pages blocked by robots.txt or noindex meta tags that should not be blocked? Has Google successfully crawled the most important pages? A beautifully designed site that search engines cannot see is not a website — it is a brochure printed in invisible ink.

2. Schema and Structured Data

Does the site emit machine-readable structured data so AI assistants and search engines can understand what the business is, where it is located, what it offers, and who the people behind it are? Specifically: Organization, LocalBusiness, Person, Article, and FAQPage schemas. Missing schema is invisible to humans, and it does limit how clearly AI engines can identify a business — but it is not the whole story, and we have corrected our earlier wording here. In July 2026 we measured 27 established family businesses. Those carrying correct LocalBusiness schema surfaced in AI answers 43% of the time; those without it, 25%. Schema roughly doubled the odds — and 57% of businesses with correct schema still never surfaced at all. Schema makes a business legible to machines. It does not make it recommended. Anyone who tells you schema alone will get you into AI answers is overselling.

3. Brand-Frame Coherence

Does the visible brand presentation match the business’s actual voice and positioning? Does the homepage hero answer the question a stranger arrives with? Are CTAs consistent across pages? Does the typography read at the standard the business represents? Is the share-card image current and on-brand? Brand incoherence creates trust-erosion at every visitor touchpoint.

4. Conversion Path Mapping

What is the path from “stranger arrives on the site” to “qualified prospect books a conversation”? How many clicks? How many friction points? Is the primary CTA visible on every page or buried? Are there dead-end pages with no clear next action? Most small business sites have conversion paths that were never deliberately designed — they are accidents of theme defaults.

5. NAP Consistency (Name · Address · Phone)

Is the business’s Name, Address, and Phone presented identically across the website, Google Business Profile, BBB, Yelp, Yellow Pages, LinkedIn Company Page, and other directories? Inconsistent NAP weakens search engines’ confidence that the business is real and consistent. For service-area businesses, this also includes Service Area consistency.

6. Page Performance

How fast does the site load? Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — Google’s Core Web Vitals. Slow pages lose visitors before content even loads. Most small business sites built on bloated themes have performance issues that visitors silently abandon over.

7. Mobile Rendering

Does every page render cleanly on phone screens? Are CTAs tappable without accidental misclicks? Does navigation work on mobile? Over 60% of North American small business web traffic is mobile — sites that look fine on desktop and break on phones are losing the majority of their visitors.

8. Hosting and Credential Control

Who actually holds the keys? Is the domain registered in the business owner’s name? Is the hosting in the owner’s name? Are CMS admin credentials known to the owner? Can the business fire its current web vendor without breaking anything? Most small businesses we audit cannot — and the realization is sobering.

9. Backup and Disaster-Recovery Posture

What happens if the site goes down tomorrow? Are there automated backups? Where are they stored? Has anyone ever tested restoring from backup? The absence of a real backup posture is the silent risk most owners discover only when it is too late.

10. Content Cadence and Authority Signals

Does the site publish new content on any cadence? Is there an Insights / blog / news section? Are there author attributions making expertise visible? Are there case studies showing real client outcomes? AI assistants and search engines weight authority signals heavily — sites without them remain invisible regardless of how well-designed the homepage is.

How the Foundation Audit Differs From a Standard SEO Audit

A standard SEO audit focuses on keyword rankings, backlink profile, and on-page optimization for specific search queries. It is a useful exercise — but it is downstream of the Foundation Audit.

The Foundation Audit asks a structurally earlier question: is the foundation of your web presence sound enough that SEO investment will actually compound, or are there pre-conditions that need to be cured first?

If a business invests in SEO before fixing indexing health, schema gaps, or NAP inconsistency, the SEO investment delivers diminishing returns. The Foundation Audit identifies the pre-conditions. SEO work follows once the foundation is sound.

The 30-Minute Live Walkthrough Format

The Foundation Audit is a live video call, not a self-service automated report. The format is deliberate. The conversation is structured but adaptive. OBrecs leads the walkthrough but pauses for the owner’s questions throughout. The owner sees the audit findings in real time — there is no opaque report generated separately, then handed over. The audit is the conversation.

Thirty minutes is the deliberate length. Longer formats favor agency-style discovery calls that fish for upsell opportunities. Shorter formats cannot cover the ten dimensions properly. Thirty minutes is the time honest measurement actually takes.

The Written Summary Deliverable

Within 24-48 hours of the Foundation Audit call, the business owner receives a written summary in their inbox documenting the ten dimensions audited and what was found on each, a prioritized list of issues from most-impactful to least-impactful, honest assessment of which issues need professional intervention versus which the owner can address with available time, a reading list of recommended further research so the owner can verify the findings independently, and an invitation to discuss next steps if interested — with no follow-up pressure if not.

The written summary is the owner’s property regardless of whether OBrecs is ever hired. It is a usable document that the owner can share with another web vendor, an in-house team member, a board, or simply file for future reference.

Why We Give the Audit Free

The Foundation Audit costs OBrecs about an hour of focused work between the call itself, preparation, and the written summary. If OBrecs were paid for this work at consulting rates, the audit would be a $200-$400 engagement. It is free for three reasons.

First, it is the right thing to do. North American small business owners have been overcharged for too long by web vendors who diagnose before they understand. A free, structured, honest measurement establishes a different relationship from the first interaction. The Bespoke standard requires it.

Second, it pre-qualifies the work. OBrecs only enters engagements with businesses where the actual work is a good fit for the actual situation. The Foundation Audit reveals whether OBrecs is the right vendor and whether the proposed work is the right work. If it is not, the audit ends with a referral, a recommendation, or a polite acknowledgment that no further engagement is needed.

Third, it builds trust before any money changes hands. Owners who have experienced the Foundation Audit understand the OBrecs methodology, voice, and standard before they ever consider hiring. By the time pricing is discussed, the question is “is this the right work” — not “is this the right vendor.”

The audit is genuinely free. There is no time-share-presentation upsell. There is no “limited slots remaining” pressure. There is no follow-up sequence designed to wear the owner down.

Three Engagement Paths After the Audit

Tier I · Local Read · CAD $2,500

The Foundation Audit findings get implemented as discrete fixes. Suited to businesses whose existing site is structurally sound but has specific issues that need professional attention — schema deployment, NAP cleanup, performance optimization, indexing fixes. Scoped, priced, and delivered within 2-3 weeks. The result: a measurably-improved version of the existing site, owned cleanly by the business.

Tier II · The OBrecs Flagship · Bespoke Build · CAD $4,500

A new site or substantial rebuild, fitted to the specific business. Includes Foundation Audit-style discovery extended into a full requirements conversation, design conversation, build, and handover. Every credential in the owner’s name, every license in the owner’s name, hosting the owner controls. This is the most-common engagement tier. Delivery typically 4-8 weeks.

Tier III · 90-Day Partnership · CAD $8,500

The Bespoke build PLUS 90 days of structured optimization, content cadence support, and outcome measurement. Suited to businesses ready to compound the foundation into measurable demand-generation over a defined window. Includes monthly reports, content publishing support, and AI-search positioning work.

All three tiers are fixed-price. Scope is documented before money changes hands. The business can decline at any point with no obligation beyond the work already authorized.

Methodology Lineage · Where the Audit Comes From

The Foundation Audit methodology is grounded in the Bespoke standard — a tradition the founder of OBrecs inherited from his parents, an Italian master tailor and an expert seamstress.

In tailoring, the foundational discipline is measure before you cut. A garment that fits the wearer is impossible without accurate measurement. Cutting fabric to a template — without measuring the body — produces clothes that almost fit, but never quite. The same logic applies to web work. A website built to an agency template — without measuring the specific business — produces a web presence that almost serves, but never quite.

The Foundation Audit is the measurement that must happen before any cutting. The ten dimensions audited are the measurements a Master Tailor would take of a body before cutting cloth: structural integrity in ten specific places where fit either holds or fails.

The methodology is not adapted from external consulting frameworks. It is adapted from the actual craft tradition the founder grew up inside. The cloth changed from wool and silk to pixels and bytes. The craft did not.
